Save the file to your computer and then launch it. Click Run new task and enter powershell in the text box, check the Create this task with administrative privileges checkbox, and then click the OK button. Use Ctrl + Shift + ESC to open Task Manager and tap the File option in the upper left corner. I went back a month or so to a much earlier restore point. Go to the Microsoft Support website and click on the Download button for the Start Menu troubleshooter. This will help you fix the problem 'Critical Error Your Start Menu isn’t working'. Method: Deep system restore and upgrade reinstall. I am also thinking to try this set of possibles next: The guides seem to have gone to 'give up and reinstall' at this point (windows 10 calls it a cheery Refresh but it still means all your applications are obliterated). I have the machine doing a farther back system restore. What would trigger something like that is what I am thinking about now. Cortana likely uses it and apparently the start menu does too. ![]() It seems for my issue and possibly yours it is something having to do with user identification/authorization or perhaps the app database. Tried to activate the hidden administrator account using administrator cmd window: Failed, account added but locked up at "Wait just a bit longer" and could not be opened Tried to install a new user account from powershell and/or the command line: New user account could be added but could not be used Tried to install a new user account: Failed. Manually started the Application Identity service - no luck Tried deleting corrupted applocker files - no luck Tried using powershell to reinstall/reregister windows apps - no luck ![]()
